CIP credits and exemptions

Introduction

Students enrolled in the CIP program can apply for credits and may be exempted from taking specific CIP courses upon completion of certain programs.

Credits granted will be recognized as transfer credits only and will not be assigned a grade. This may affect qualification for an Honours CIP certificate and a student’s chance at winning an academic prize.

Credits are available for completion of the following programs:

Insurance Institute certificate programs - Risk Management and Commercial Insurance
Insurance Brokers Association of Canada - CAIB
Provincial Licensing Agent/Broker
Wilfrid Laurier University Insurance - Risk Management Concentration
University of Calgary - Risk Management, Insurance and Finance

Insurance Institute certificate programs

Commercial Insurance Certificate Program

Students who complete all three courses required for the Commercial Insurance Certificate program are eligible to apply for a maximum of two (2) credits towards elective CIP courses if they have not yet completed the elective requirements of the CIP program. Students must apply for these credits; they are not issued automatically.

Students who complete CIP course C70: Gateway to Commercial Insurance, plus Commercial Insurance Certificate courses B220 and B230 (and have not completed other CIP electives), receive a CIP elective credit for C70 plus one unspecified CIP credit for completing the balance of the Commercial Insurance Certificate. Risk Management Certificate Program

Students who complete all three courses of the Insurance Institute's Risk Management Certificate program are eligible to apply for a maximum of two (2) credits towards elective CIP courses if they have not yet completed the elective requirements of the CIP program. Students must apply for these credits; they are not issued automatically. The credits recognize completion of the Insurance Institute’s Risk Management Certificate. Risk management courses completed at other institutions are not eligible for CIP elective credits.

Insurance Brokers Association of Canada - CAIB 

Students who have completed all the courses required for the CAIB designation are eligible for three (3) credits:

  • C11: Principles and Practice of Insurance (Mandatory Course)
  • C130: Essential Skills for the Insurance Broker and Agent (Applied Professional Course)
  • One (1) unspecified elective course

Only two (2) credits will be available if the student has already completed course C11.

Credit fees (Effective August 1, 2024):

All provinces:
C11: $120 +tax
C77: $65 +tax
C130: $65 +tax

Total: $250 +tax

To apply for credit, applicants must:

  1. Be a member of their local IIC Institute.
  2. Email a clear copy of their CAIB certificate and the letter indicating successful CAIB completion or copies of the grades for successful CAIB courses to credits@insuranceinstitute.ca
  3. Submit payment:

Requests will not be processed until full payment is received.

Provincial Licensing Credit for Agents/Brokers/Adjusters

Course credit is available for successfully obtaining a provincial licence, which includes meeting all the provincial regulatory, academic, and/or sponsorship requirements.

Upon completion of an agent’s, broker’s or adjuster's insurance licence in any province, the applicant is eligible for credit for C11: Principles and Practice of Insurance.

Credits are available for successful completion of provincial licensing requirements and exam. Credits vary with the requirements of each province. Applicants can contact their local institute or chapter for information.

Credit fees (Effective August 1, 2024):

All provinces:
C11: $120 +tax

To apply for credit:

  1. Applicants are required to be members of their local IIC Institute. Contact Member Services for further information
  2. Submit a clear copy of their agent or broker licence or a copy of their Insurance Institute level 1 licensing completion certificate at credits@insuranceinstitute.ca
  3. Submit payment:

Requests will not be processed until full payment is received.

Wilfrid Laurier University Insurance - Risk Management Concentration

Students who complete the Insurance and Risk Management concentration in the Honours Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) program at Wilfrid Laurier University are eligible for a C11 Principles and Practice of Insurance credit within (2) two years of their graduation date and may challenge C16 The Business of Insurance exam within (5) five years of their graduation date.

Requirements for Credit

In order to be eligible for the C11 Principles and Practice of Insurance credit, the student must have completed a minimum of four (4) courses from Wilfrid Laurier’s Honours BBA concentration - Insurance and Risk Management.

The eligible courses are:

1. BU353: Introduction to Risk Management and Insurance
and
2. BU419: Property and Liability Insurance Management
and
3. BU429: Capital Market Issues in Property and Liability Insurance
or
BU433: Management of Financial Institutions

And one other course from your Insurance and Risk Management concentration.

BU412: Services Marketing Management
BU413: Personal Financial Planning and Management
BU414: Occupational Health and Safety
BU423: Options, Futures and Swaps
BU425: Business Analytics
BU483: Life and Health Insurance
GG396: Natural Hazards

University of Calgary - Risk Management, Insurance and Finance

Students at the University of Calgary may qualify for advanced standing transfer credit and/or exam challenge privileges.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Must begin the CIP program within two (2) years of the graduation date from University of Calgary
  • Must have graduated with a BComm in Insurance with a concentration in Risk Management & Insurance (RMIN) or Risk Management: Insurance & Finance (RMIF))
  • Must submit an official University of Calgary transcript
  • Applicable fees must be paid
  • Must have completed the following 3 courses:
  1. Introduction to Risk Management & Insurance (317)
  2. Managing Commercial Property & Liability Risks (459)
  3. Advanced Topics in Risk Management & Insurance (579)

Once these criteria have been met:

  • Eligible for a transfer credit for C11 – Principles & Practice (mandatory course)
  • Within 5 years of graduation date, may challenge:
  • C12 – Insurance on Property (mandatory course) and/or
  • C13 – Insurance Against Liability Part 1 (mandatory course)

CÉGEP: CIP Recognition of Prior Learning Exam for AEC/DEC Damage Insurance Programs

Graduates who complete the Attestation d’études collégiales (AEC) Damage Insurance program or the diplôme d’études collégiales (DEC) Financial services and Insurance Technology are eligible to obtain four Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) credits upon successful completion of the CIP Recognition of Prior Learning Exam for AEC/DEC Damage Insurance Programs.
