The Insurance Institute has been conducting demographic research on behalf of the industry since 2007. This Full Report of the Demographics of the P&C Insurance Industry in Canada provides a comprehensive analysis of the demographics of the industry’s workforce and retirements projections to 2027.

The share of employees planning to leave their employer within the next five years had declined from the previous report. (33.9 per cent in 2009 to 29.0 per cent in 2017) and remains at 29.7 per cent in 2022. (see Chart 44.) In 2017 the majority of those leaving were staying within the P&C insurance industry.

Surveys of industry employees and HR professionals provide insight into workforce recruitment and retention, and employee satisfaction. Top issues such as salaries, career development, mental health and inclusion support, and hybrid or remote work opportunities are explored through both perspectives. Download full report.

The first research report, entitled “A Demographic Analysis of the Property & Casualty Insurance Industry in Canada, 2007 –2017,” was published in May, 2008. The purpose of the research was to conduct a census of the demographic composition of the insurance industry and to forecast human resource needs and capacity into the future.
