Broker (RIBO) licence

Insurance brokers in Ontario are governed by the Registered Insurance Brokers Act and licenced though the Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario (RIBO).

The Insurance Institute sells the materials needed to study and successfully pass the exams required to be licenced as an Insurance broker.

Criteria for maintaining your insurance broker licence

Code of conduct

All brokers who are licenced in Ontario must follow a code of conduct.

Upkeep of credits

Every registered insurance broker must meet certain qualification standards and continuing education requirements, established by RIBO.

Errors & Omissions insurance policy

Every registered insurance broker must be bonded and covered by an Errors & Omissions insurance policy.

Brokers and Agents

Level 1 - Entry level

Regulated by the Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario (RIBO), the successful completion of the entry-level examination allows you to provide insurance services under the supervision of a senior broker.

Level 2 - Technical

Successfully passing the exam qualifies an individual to attain the “Level 2” Licence. If you hold a RIBO Level 1 licence, you can write the exam.

Level 3 - Management

The successful completion of both the “Level 2 Technical” examination and “Level 3 Management” examination qualifies an individual for the “Level 3” Licence and therefore makes them eligible to act as the Principal Broker of a broker business. However, individuals who hold a “Level 3” Licence will still be under the direction of the Principal Broker of the firm they are employed by.
